The Cult of Gloria Steinem is about the erasure of the totally un-glamorous Labor Organizer Betty Friedan.
Queer Atheist comments.
In all this celebration of the respectable bourgeoise 'Feminism' of Gloria Gloria its 'as if' that old & totally un-glamorous Labor Organizer, Betty Friedan, suffers not just an injustice, but a betrayal of her pioneering work ‘The Feminine Mystique’! This book was on the BestSeller List competing with Helen Girley Brown’s ‘Sex and the Single Girl’. Friedan appeared on all those male dominated ‘Talk Shows’ of the day, Joe Pine, Louis Lomax and even on that Daytime favorite ‘Girl Talk’ hosted by Virginia Graham from 1963–1969. Friedan took the heat for years before Steinem appeared on the scene - who can forget this:

Or consider this interview with Steinem Discussing Her Time in the CIA":
As a High-School dropout I watched too much Television, but I recall these events because I watch that Television. All except the CIA testimony, which I discovered by chance.
Jessica Bennett and her nostalgia for this magazine, its contributors and its editor, is full of the stuff of the current vogue for self-aggrandizement, even in its retrograde expressions . It’s a politically useful refraction, wedded to a nostalgia that serves as a balm, in this Historical Moment of concatenating Crises, that seem endless, and immune to any form of meliorism. Call it political desperation, or a selective American version of ‘The Politics of Cultural Despair’!
